November 2009 // Issue 40I really love Auckland at this time of year , we are just getting through the worst (I hope) of the rain, and everything is still looking fresh. I'm not so keen however on recent suggestions that we should go it alone in Auckland, and while its nice to give your business to an Aucklander, the people who deserve your business are those who look after it best, i.e. with competitive pricing and great service, wherever they are based. One thing Aucklanders are very good at is supporting major sporting events. After struggling home in the recently held over the bridge marathon I was uplifted to see the number of people welcoming us at the finish. Congratulations to Auckland Marathon organisers and their major sponsor Adidas for another great event. You may be aware that the Accident Compensation Commission is raising many of its levies, including the Residual Claims levy. This will impact on your business if you hire staff, and also on the costs of agencies like ourselves who provide a lot temporary staff. ACC Peoplepulse Survey Our international trade performance is improving, mostly off the back of major reductions in crude oil imports (volume and prices) with more modest reductions in our exports. For more read on... Immigration stats are back in the news with recent reports that increasing immigration will have a positive impact on NZ's overall GDP (see a recent article in the NZ Herald). For a winning alternate approach to ongoing immigration as a means of improving GDP, the Israeli's, Danes and Singaporean's have done extraordinarily well in attracting offshore venture capital and, according to a recent Economist article (unfortunately this article is subscriber only so I can't reproduce it or link it for you), all three economies are showing that through strong government interaction with global capital markets, anything is possible.
