You heard it
here first!

Welcome to the
sixth edition of Agentalpha! We trust issue five was both informative and
entertaining. To recap on our
last issue we looked at the largest issues facing candidates when applying
directly to employers, we considered the best ways to attract the best
candidates; we introduced you to the newest member of our team and gave you a
run down of the market in general.
We now have our newest member up and running so she will say a quick
hello to you all personally. We
tell you about exciting things that have been going on in the office and as
usual, Sarah will update you on the market. Anything you want us to advertise, or any interesting
facts etc you would like us to include in issue seven, feel free to email
these through!

A Healthy Employee is a Productive Employee
|
|
Now you have all heard
about Denae – we introduced her to you in our last newsletter. We are beginning to wonder if
hiring Denae was a good option!
Denae is working us hard…
and not just for our clients and candidates, but for ourselves too! Denae is one of those extra healthy
people who loves eating rabbit food and stretching her limbs in a thorough
daily yoga session – and this has rubbed off on us.
Every lunch hour the
Alpha team has been putting our energies into Yoga, Pilates, Cardio
workouts and yes…. Zumba! We
see it as providing good entertainment for the window cleaners. It also helps take their mind off
the fact they are dangling from a piece of string from the top of a
high-rise building.
|
But seriously – it has
been a fantastic break from that computer screen and an even better way to
really bond as a team. As a
result of these workouts, our productivity is high and we are healthy,
happier and satisfied employees.
We would recommend you
all give it a go! Especially
Zumba as you get a good laughing workout too! Just be sure to lock the office door first and be prepared
to make the window cleaners smile.
Another great idea to
give you a burst of positive energy in the morning that Denae has gifted us
with is to whip up a Green Smoothie.
It’s the healthiest breakfast you will ever have and a treat to your
taste buds. In fact, it’s so
delicious my 4 year old practically begs for one every morning, so it’s
great for kids as well.
|
GREEN SMOOTHIE
1 large banana
1 portion of
frozen spinach
1 portion of
your favourite fruit
A handful of
ice
¼ avocado
Blend until smooth
(adding water to achieve your desired consistency).
You can add oranges,
apple juice, low fat frozen yoghurt, whatever you want really – so get your
creative juices flowing!
You really do feel like a
super hero after one of these in the morning, so give it a go and watch
your productivity fly!

Market Update
|
|
Many of us, including economists and the
Labour Department, did not predict the 10-year high in unemployment we
reached at the end of 2009. But to be fair, how were we to know that the
influx of returning Kiwis, as well as new immigrants escaping worsening
economies in their own countries, would result in around 16,000 people
entering the work force last year and being unable to find work? This,
added to the already rising number of people out of work due to companies
downsizing, brought us to our surprising new high.
The good news for 2010 is that the Labour Department
expects that the market is close to reaching a turning point. An increase
in advertised vacancies points to mild job growth in the March 2010
quarter.
|
However, employment opportunities would
need to grow quite significantly this year in order for the labour market
to absorb the overflow of workers available. Assuming our economy
strengthens this year, we may need to hold out till 2011 to get our much
needed turn around in the labour market.
Candidates looking
for work in 2010 should be ready for another competitive year in job
hunting. Consultants at Alpha advise job seekers to have their CVs up to
date, polished and mistake free. Extra touches such as an excellent cover
letter tailored for the role could be the difference between getting to interview,
and finding a polite decline in your inbox. Conversely, employers will need
to act quickly when they have a good candidate in front of them as the best
of the bunch will not stay on the market for long.
|
Smart employers will be looking at ways
to hold on to their best people (who may have held out for a year or two
with no pay rise!) when the market does start to move.

We’ve been learning Te Reo and Tikanga!
|
|
How many of
you can answer 10 questions about Superman? How many of you know the name of your great
grandmother? I bet most of you
said ‘yes’ to the first and ‘no’ to the latter. I know I did.
Earlier this
year we asked ourselves, “How can we show our clients we are truly
interested in their business needs?”
What can we do to increase our awareness of Tikanga and how Maori
issues and protocols impact on the New Zealand government sector? How does this relate specifically
to our clients?
Being situated
in Wellington, many of our clients are made up from the central and
quasi-government sector. We
called around our contacts and they introduced us to Ray Ropata. Ray agreed to join us in our office
for a few months to teach us the overall fundamentals of
|
Tikanga and Te
Reo Maori, and how this ties in with governmental business needs. We have experienced many sore
cheeks and sore abdominal muscles too! We have learnt a great deal over the past few months,
from history long gone to present protocols, to hellos and goodbyes to
fully-fledged introductions and general conversational phrases. We have all found these lessons
highly interesting and beneficial in relating to our candidates amongst the
Maori community, and our clients within the government sector.
You may have
already noticed we have been using our Te Reo where we can in emails
and over the phone.
We are still
beginners though, so be gentle with us, we are certainly not fluent yet as
some of you are!
|
As we are
coming to the end of our time with Ray we would like to put out our
recommendation of him to others.
He has taught us a great deal and has made it fun too. We have really enjoyed his
teachings – his passion really came through with each lesson and his
teaching methods are unusual but excellent! We just had a test this morning – and we all aced it!
If you are
interested in finding out more about Ray’s services feel free to email him
directly at rayropata@gmail.com
