The company:

This is a rare, permanent opportunity for a Kai Kōkiri. My client is a charitable trust, who works with children and youth across NZ.The Kai Kōkiri will provide high-quality cultural support to rangatahi and promote the development of cultural competence, you will also work directly with Rangatahi to ensure that programme delivery embraces best cultural practices and protocols in accordance with Te Ao Māori and the National Care Standards

Duties include:

  • Conduct cultural assessments with identified rangatahi in care
  • Arrange for rangatahi to learn, understand and engage with Te Ao Māori  
  • Facilitate opportunities for rangatahi to visit or attend marae, cultural festivities, tangihanga, whānau birthdays, haka competitions, unveilings, weddings, whānau reunions etc
  • Assist rangatahi to learn about their culture, connect with places relevant to their culture (whenua), and to access resources to learn their language (e.g. te reo)
  • Support rangatahi to establish, maintain and strengthen their sense of belonging through connections with whānau, hapū and iwi.
  • Ensure rangatahi build, maintain, and strengthen connections with family, whānau, hapū, iwi and family group
  • Plan and support culturally appropriate care transitions, including whakatau and poroporoaki and reconnecting young people with whānau, hapū and iwi at the direction of the Kaumātua, Māori Cultural Advisor and care service Practice Leader(s), provide cultural training and advice to care service staff and caregivers through face-to-face training delivery and other internal resources
  • You will be based in the Auckland office but there will be frequent travel to Te Tai Tokerau to support rangatahi
  • From time to time there will be national travel to support rangatahi to visit marae, whānau, hapu, and iwi. Overnight travel will at times be required

To be considered for this role:

  • You must hold a tertiary qualification in maatauranga Māori social services, mental health or education
  • Full drivers license
  • Be fluent and understand Te Reo Māori
  • You must have a deep commitment to and understanding of Tikanga Māori
  • Experience in dealing with conflict resolution, relationship, and behavioral issues
  • Established whānau, iwi, hapū networks
  • Writes well and can present information in a range of different forums and media
