The company:

My client is a charitable trust, who works with children and youth across NZ. The Māori Cultural Advisor supports the achievement of the clients vision, mission and values by providing high-quality cultural advice to promote the development of cultural competence throughout the organisation. The Māori Cultural Advisor will work with Kia Puāwai staff and caregivers to support them in effectively engaging whanau, rangatahi and tamariki, and with managers to ensure that program delivery embraces best cultural practices and protocols in accordance with Te Ao Māori.

Duties include:

  • Assist and participate in noho Marae, and organisational pōwhiri and poroporoak
  • Assess Māori cultural needs and provide cultural training and advice to staff through face-to-face training delivery, Te Whare Akoranga, Pae Ako and other internal resources
  • Work closely with the Kaumaatua, Māori Leadership Group and clinical staff to ensure that cultural practice's processes, protocols and our bi-cultural framework
    are woven into clinical practice and service delivery to promote successful outcomes for rangatahi Māori and their whānau
  • Support and advise the Māori Leadership Group to ensure that Te Rautaki Māori o Kia Puāwai (the Māori strategy) is current, relevant, and appropriate in supporting evolving organisational and stakeholder needs. Support the Māori Leadership Group to successfully implement Te Rautaki Māori o Kia Puāwai, ensuring that objectives are achieved
  • Anticipate the needs of leadership, management and service delivery leaders to improve the outcomes for Māori clients

To be considered for this role:

  • A level 7 tertiary qualification - Tertiary qualification in social services, mental health or education
  • Some experience in community development or engagement
  • Full drivers license
  • Be fluent and understand Te Reo Māori
  • You must have a deep commitment to and understanding of Tikanga Māori
  • Experience working with young people or whanau
  • Experience in dealing with conflict resolution, relationship and behavioural issues
  • Established whanau, iwi, hapu networks
  • This role will be based at the national office however a level of flexibility is needed to be able to travel locally and nationally to support in noho (Marae visits), training delivery, and providing other cultural support as required.
  • Flexibility in start and finish times may be required to fulfil the role
  • Writes well and can present information in a range of different forums and media
