About the Role

As a Registered Psychiatric Nurse, you will provide specialist mental health nursing care within a secure forensic environment. You will work collaboratively with consumers, families, carers and the multidisciplinary team to deliver safe, evidence-based and recovery-oriented care.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Providing comprehensive psychiatric nursing care to consumers with complex mental health presentations.
• Conducting mental health assessments and developing recovery-focused care plans.
• Supporting consumers experiencing severe and persistent mental illness.
• Undertaking ongoing risk assessment and developing appropriate risk management strategies.
• Building strong therapeutic relationships through person-centred and recovery-oriented practice.
• Managing challenging behaviours using effective de-escalation and behavioural management strategies.
• Administering and monitoring psychotropic medications.
• Participating in multidisciplinary treatment planning and clinical reviews.
• Delivering and supporting group-based therapeutic interventions.
• Coordinating care and contributing to safe and effective discharge planning.
• Maintaining high standards of clinical documentation, professional practice and patient safety.

The role may also provide opportunities to rotate through the Early Intervention Support Team (EIST).

Working alongside clinical teams across the hospital, EIST supports the management of complex clinical situations through:

• De-escalation and behavioural management.
• Therapeutic engagement.
• Early intervention and clinical support.
• Supporting teams to safely manage escalating behaviours.
• Promoting a safe, therapeutic environment for consumers and staff.

To be considered for this position, you must have:

• Current registration as a Registered Nurse with AHPRA.
• Minimum Postgraduate Certificate in Mental Health Nursing, or recognised equivalent.
• Eligibility to work in Australia.
• Ability to successfully satisfy police and security screening requirements.
• Typically 2+ years of post-registration psychiatric nursing experience.

Highly desirable experience includes:

• Adult inpatient mental health.
• Acute psychiatric units.
• Secure mental health environments.
• Forensic mental health.
• Psychiatric Intensive Care Units (PICU).
• Correctional or prison health services.
• High-dependency mental health environments.
