Position Description: Release Train Engineer (RTE)

  • Certified SAFe® Release Train Engineer

Position Overview:

The Release Train Engineer (RTE) is a pivotal role responsible for facilitating Agile Release Trains (ARTs) and ensuring alignment, synchronisation, and successful delivery of value across multiple Agile teams. They serve as a servant leader and coach, enabling teams to adopt Agile practices effectively and achieve their goals. The RTE collaborates closely with Product Owners, Scrum Masters, and other stakeholders to drive continuous improvement and optimise the flow of value delivery.

A client based in Auckland Central is under going a large agile transformation and requiring RTE’s to assist with the successful delivery across multiple Agile teams.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and facilitate key Agile ceremonies and events including Program Increment (PI) Planning, Inspect and Adapt (I&A) workshops, Scrum of Scrums, and other relevant meetings to ensure alignment and collaboration among teams.
  • Act as a steward for the ART, ensuring that all teams are working towards the common objectives and priorities identified during PI Planning. Coordinate dependencies, manage risks, and resolve impediments to keep the train on track.
  • Provide guidance and support to Agile teams, Product Owners, and Scrum Masters on Agile principles, practices, and frameworks. Help teams to continuously improve their Agile maturity and performance.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives within the ART, identifying opportunities to enhance processes, increase efficiency, and foster a culture of innovation and learning.
  • Monitor the performance of Agile teams within the ART, tracking key metrics such as velocity, cycle time, and quality. Generate reports and metrics to provide visibility into the progress and health of the ART.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with stakeholders including Product Management, Business Owners, and other relevant parties. Communicate effectively to ensure alignment on priorities, dependencies, and delivery timelines.
  • Identify and mitigate risks that could impact the successful delivery of the ART. Proactively address issues and obstacles to minimise disruptions and optimise delivery outcomes.
  • Champion the Agile mindset and principles throughout the organisation. Encourage collaboration, transparency, and a customer-centric approach to value delivery.

Requirements:

  • Certified Scrum Master (CSM) or equivalent Agile certification.
  • Proven experience as a Release Train Engineer or similar role in an Agile environment.
  • Strong understanding of Agile methodologies and frameworks (e.g., Scrum, SAFe, Kanban).
  • Excellent facilitation, coaching, and mentoring skills.
  • Effective communication and stakeholder management abilities.
  • Analytical mindset with the ability to interpret data and metrics to drive decisions.
  • Problem-solving skills and ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Commitment to continuous learning and improvement.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • SAFe Program Consultant (SPC) certification, SAFe™ 6 or equivalent.
  • Certified SAFe® Release Train Engineer
  • Experience with Agile project management tools (e.g., JIRA, Rally, VersionOne).
  • Familiarity with DevOps practices and principles.
  • Knowledge of Lean principles and practices.
  • Experience working in a scaled Agile environment with multiple ARTs or Agile Release Trains.
