Our central government client is looking for an experienced Senior Policy Advisor with a background or interest in economics or finance. You will be providing financial policy advice to support cost savings in a regulatory environment. In this fast-paced and varied environment, you will contribute to the development and implementation of policies that benefit New Zealanders. The work programme will focus on providing big picture policy advice, leading key discussions, and making recommendations to influence decision-making.

Our client is also open to candidates with a strong background in finance or economics who are looking to develop their skills in policy. However, strong numerical and data analysis skills are essential.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and contribute to key policy projects to achieve optimal outcomes
  • Lead the delivery of policy advice and facilitate key discussions with internal and external stakeholders
  • Look at and analyse financial trends, come up with solutions
  • Project management experience.
  • Draft comprehensive reports and briefings for Ministers and senior leadership
  • Develop data-driven policy insights and recommendations through rigorous research and analysis
  • Exhibit strong analytical and presentation skills
  • Strengthen team capability by mentoring and coaching policy advisors to enhance their knowledge and skills

Your Skills:

  • Experienced Senior Policy Advisor in a NZ government agency, or Crown Entity 
  • Background or interest in economics, finance or similar area
  • Experience (and a high degree of comfort) dealing with ambiguity
  • Proven ability to communicate with influence, and experience briefing elected representatives
  • Excellent writing skills, experience drafting policy papers and ministerial briefings
  • A good level of interest and some experience working with data beneficial given our breadth of work
  • Strong stakeholder engagement skills with other key agencies and providers including local government
  • A tertiary qualification in a discipline relevant to policy, social science or economics.
