Are you a compassionate and confident midwife who is passionate about providing personalised, culturally safe maternity care? We’re seeking a dedicated Registered Midwife to support women and their pēpi through their birthing centre experience, creating a welcoming environment where whānau feel respected, informed and empowered.

This is an opportunity to contribute to positive birthing experiences within a community-focused, primary maternity care setting, working alongside Lead Maternity Carers (LMCs) and other health professionals to ensure safe, coordinated and holistic care.

About the role

You’ll play an important part in supporting māmā and their babies during their time at the birthing centre, combining sound clinical judgement with a warm, relationship-centred approach. You’ll promote informed choice, recognise individual and cultural needs, and help ensure every whānau receives care that reflects their circumstances, preferences and wellbeing.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide safe, evidence-based midwifery care that supports the physical, emotional and cultural wellbeing of māmā and pēpi.
  • Work collaboratively with LMCs and other healthcare professionals to deliver coordinated care tailored to individual needs.
  • Assess and monitor maternal and newborn wellbeing, recognise changes in clinical condition, and escalate concerns or arrange referrals when required.
  • Support breastfeeding, postnatal recovery, newborn care and the transition into early parenthood.
  • Empower māmā and whānau through clear communication, health education and informed decision-making.
  • Maintain timely, accurate clinical records and provide effective clinical handovers.
  • Uphold professional standards, privacy requirements, health and safety practices, and relevant legislation.
  • Contribute to a positive team environment through collaboration, reflective practice, professional development and continuous quality improvement.
  • Integrate Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles, tikanga Māori and culturally responsive practices into everyday care.

About you

You’re a caring, adaptable and motivated midwife who understands the importance of building trust with māmā and whānau. You bring clinical confidence, a commitment to safe practice and a genuine desire to deliver respectful, individualised care.

You will ideally have:

  • Current registration as a midwife with the Midwifery Council of New Zealand and a valid Annual Practising Certificate.
  • Experience in maternity care, preferably within a primary birthing centre or small clinical team.
  • Strong assessment, clinical decision-making and emergency response skills appropriate to a primary maternity setting.
  • The ability to prioritise competing demands, remain calm under pressure and recognise when additional clinical support is needed.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including effective clinical handover using SBAR.
  • An understanding of tikanga Māori, with a willingness to continue developing your knowledge of te reo Māori and Māori models of health.
  • An ability to work respectfully with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Confidence using electronic clinical records and everyday digital communication tools.
  • A full, current New Zealand driver's licence and the ability to meet relevant background-check requirements.

What you’ll bring to the team

You’ll be approachable, reliable and proactive, with a calm and compassionate manner. You value teamwork, respect different perspectives and understand the importance of creating an environment where māmā, pēpi and whānau feel safe, heard and supported.

You’ll also be committed to ongoing learning, recognising the impact of bias and inequity, and continually strengthening your cultural awareness and clinical practice.

Be part of a difference that matters

If you’re passionate about supporting positive maternity outcomes and want to contribute your skills to a collaborative, whānau-centred care environment, we’d love to hear from you.
