Bring your policy expertise to some of New Zealand’s most complex and high-profile issues.
An opportunity is available for an experienced Senior Policy Advisor to join a team working across a varied portfolio of work in the intelligence and national security space. You’ll contribute to significant policy initiatives, working with multiple government agencies on issues that have a real impact on the safety of New Zealanders.
About the role
You’ll work across a varied portfolio and fast-paced programme of work on issues including national and domestic security, cyber security, justice sector and defence.
A key part of the role is providing independent, second-opinion policy advice — critically assessing proposals developed by other agencies, advising on policy options and risks, and preparing high-quality briefings for Ministers and senior leaders.
About you
You’ll be an experienced Senior Policy Advisor with experience leading policy projects, excellent writing skills and a solid understanding of machinery of government decision-making processes.
You’ll bring:
- A number of years’ experience operating at Senior Policy Advisor level with the ability to take the lead on projects (experienced senior)
- Strong Big P policy experience, including developing and critically assessing policy advice.
- Experience contributing to policy projects involving legislative reform.
- A sound understanding of machinery of government and experience preparing policy briefings for Ministers.
- The ability to work at pace, manage competing priorities and deliver sound advice under tight deadlines.
- Strong relationship-building skills, including the confidence to challenge constructively and navigate difficult conversations.
- Ability to coach and mentor others within the team and the group.
- A mature, collaborative approach and the ability to build trust across teams and agencies.
Experience or an interest in cyber, national security or justice sector issues would be an advantage. Existing Top Secret security clearance, or ability / willingness to obtain the appropriate clearance, is also desirable but not essential.
If you’re a seasoned senior policy professional who thrives on complex issues, sound judgement and meaningful public-sector work, we’d love to hear from you.
