About the role
As a Policy Advisor, you will contribute to the development of high-quality policy advice across a range of issues. You will work on moderately complex policy projects, undertaking research and analysis, developing policy options and providing practical advice.
Your work will include:

- Considering data, domestic and international research and the potential impacts of different policy options
- Identifying the costs, benefits, opportunities and risks associated with policy choices
- Contributing to policy projects from scoping and planning through to implementation and evaluation

The role provides an excellent opportunity to broaden your policy experience while working alongside experienced senior policy professionals.
It is a varied portfolio involving complex policy challenges and the opportunity to contribute to work that can make a positive difference for community, families and whānau.
This is a positive, energetic team with strong senior policy capability and a supportive environment in which to develop your skills.
About you
We are looking for someone who has:
- 1–2 years' policy experience within a New Zealand government department — this role is suited to someone with some practical policy experience rather than a recent graduate
- A good understanding of the New Zealand public policy environment and Machinery of Government
- Strong analytical and written skills, with the ability to communicate complex issues clearly and concisely
- Good judgement and the ability to consider evidence, risks and different perspectives
- Strong relationship-building and collaboration skills
- Confidence engaging with a range of stakeholders
- An interest in working with data and numbers, and the ability to develop your quantitative skills where required
- An understanding of the New Zealand context and the implications of policy for different communities.
A tertiary qualification in public policy, economics, law, education or another relevant discipline is desirable, or equivalent relevant experience.
An understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and its implications for policy development is important, alongside an awareness of the needs and perspectives of Māori.
